Born into Brothels

Born Into Brothels
The film depicts the transformation of several children growing up in the red-light district of Calcutta. The directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman documented brothels, and Briski, who is a professional photographer, taught children how to use cameras to document and share their world how they see it. It empowered those children to share their testimonies of creativity.
This work-of-art film displayed an empowering and liberating nature of art and went on to win an Academy Award for Documentary Feature in 2005. Amazingly, this film was nearly lost in a fire and later digitally restored, received a Sundance Institute Documentary Fund Grant in 2004, and won the Documentary Audience Award.
