best movies of sundance film festival 2019

The Sundance Film Festival 2021 is happening soon and we just can’t wait to see what the coming year has in store for all the entertainment enthusiasts. But while we wait, don’t you think it’s fair that we take a look at the Sundance Film Festival winners of 2019?

Every year, first-timers and experienced filmmakers submit their work to the Sundance Institute so they could be recognized by the film fraternity of the entire world. Some make their names by displaying thought-provoking ideas while others get the chance to improve themselves and come out shinier than before.

Some win, some lose their part of the deal. So, let’s take a look at the Sundance winners 2019 and see how hard the standards have been set for the coming year.

sundance film festival awards

The first and the biggest award is the US Dramatic Audience Award that was taken home by the crowd-pleasing Brittany Runs a Marathon. The film stars Jillian Bell and is based on a woman who takes running as a method to resolve the issues in her life and breaks the stereotypes surrounding her. The movie was picked up by Amazon Studios for $14 million and you can even watch it online.

Whereas Clemency took home the U.S Dramatic Jury Award. The film stars Alfre Woodard as a prison warden who has been executing inmates for years and now it has taken a huge toll on her.

The list of Sundance award winners is quite extensive and the above mentioned two winners attained the top awards of the festival. We have mentioned some other winners down below that you can take a look at.

one child nation

The list of Sundance documentary winners grew last year commendably when Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang won the prize of the US Grand Jury Prize Documentary for their film One Child Nation. The movie was about a filmmaker who after becoming a mother uncovers the untold story of China’s one-child policy and realizes how it has impacted generations of parents and children.

The Audience Award U.S Documentary was given to Knock Down The House, a story of the young bartender in Bronx, a grieving mother in Nevada, a registered nurse in Missouri and a coal miner’s daughter in West Virginia who combine forces of insurgent candidates to challenge the powerful incumbents of Congress.

The Audience Award: World Cinema Documentary went to Sea of Shadows. The documentary was based on vaquita, the world’s smallest whale that is near extinction because its habitats are destroyed by Chinese mafia and Mexican cartels.

Queen of Hearts

The Audience Award: World Cinema Dramatic was presented to the Queen of Hearts, a movie in which a stepmother seduces his step-son and sabotages both her career and her family and now must face some fatal consequences.

The Sundance short-film winner for 2019 was Soudade Kaadan’s Aziza that took home the Short Film Grand Jury Prize. Some of the renowned Sundance short film winners in previous years include And so we put goldfish in the pool by Makato Nagahisa, Matria by Alvaro Gago, Thunder Road by Jim Cummings and World of Tomorrow by Don Hertzfeldt

These were some of the big Sundance Film Festival 2019 winners. The list is too long so we only shared the biggest awards of the event. The Sundance Film Festival movie winners attain worldwide recognition and if someone is a newbie, their career takes off towards the moon the very instant they win.

We are looking forward to the Sundance Film Festival 2021 and we can’t wait to see who takes the cake this year.
